3-Day Christmas-Tree Hunting Guest Experience

A weekend visit to the Lost Sierra is sure to become a beloved and lasting family tradition. And could there be a more perfect place to make new family memories than Greenhorn Ranch? If you live within driving distance of Greenhorn Ranch, make your visit even more special by bringing home memories and a Christmas tree, cut from the nearby forest. This is about as far from a city lot as you can get. (Just make sure to purchase a permit by mail and bring it with you.)

Here’s a sample itinerary for a fun weekend getaway. We know if you visit once you’ll want to come back again and again.

Day 1

Check in

Noon: Drop your bags in the lodge or your cabin and take a load off.

You have plenty of time to take a hike, drop a line in the pond, or just kick back and relax by the fire before we round up for dinner.

6:00 PM Dinner

Head back over to the kitchen for a delicious dinner, and take some time to get to know our  ranch staff and other guests. Our chef is able to accommodate any dietary needs or restrictions, so make sure to let us know what you need.

7:30 PM After Dinner

After dinner, enjoy a fireside chat and s’more while you do some star gazing, or head to the Saloon for a beer or signature cocktail. Partake in one of our entertaining diversions -- billiards or board games. What’s your pleasure?

Day 2

6:30 AM Sunrise

Head outdoors and explore the beautiful wilderness surrounding the ranch on foot. Keep an eye out for deer, squirrels, hawks and other local wildlife. Don’t forget to take the views, too.

7:00 AM Breakfast

Over in the Kitchen, our chef and staff have been up for hours, brewing coffee and preparing a wholesome, satisfying breakfast to warm your belly before you head out on a hike. It’s chilly out, so don’t forget to layer up. And even though it’s winter, don’t skip the sunscreen. Greenhorn Ranch sits at nearly 4,000 feet elevation and the sun burns a little brighter up here.

9:00 AM Hit the trail

There’s so much around Greenhorn Ranch to see by foot! Your self-guided tour will take you through dense forests to beautiful hilltop vistas. There’s simply no better way to experience the lush Lost Sierra than foot, or snowshoes (snow level permitting).


11:30 AM - 12:30 PM Lunch


12:30 PM - 3:30 PM Tree Hunting

After lunch, bundle up and head up into the wilderness for some Christmas Tree hunting. Our seasoned staff knows the best secret spots where you can find a tree to bring back home. Ask them before you hit the trail.

4:00 PM Make and Take Holiday Decor

Now’s your chance to grab all the pinecones you can and create your own holiday decor. Let our staff show you the tricks to turning your natural treasures into beautiful displays. After your of tree hunting, you’ll be ready for the warmth of the Lodge fire and your favorite holiday tunes. Make your way to the Chuckhouse for dinner or don’t hesitate to stay in your pajamas and have us bring dinner to you at the fireplace.

Day 3

Get up and get packed so you can make the most of your last morning at Greenhorn. Drop your bags at the front desk, and head over for one last hot-cooked breakfast. Then hit the trail by foot or ski.
